As the weather continues to cool down, make sure the inside of your home is a pleasant place to be. Winter is fast approaching, and now is the time to grab a Pumpkin Spice Latte and consider some interior painting. Painting a few walls, rooms or your entire home can add some life and energy to your home. Here are some tips, insights, and answers to our most frequently asked questions regarding interior painting.
1. Should I paint walls and ceilings the same color or different colors? There is no right or wrong answer here. If your wall colors are going to be dark, we would advise painting a white or light color on the ceiling. Dark colors on ceilings visually bring the ceiling down and make a room feel confined and smaller. Consider painting the ceiling white or a lighter version of your wall color.
2. How may coats should I apply? We always apply 2 coats on interior surfaces. If you have ever painted one coat, come back two hours later and see small spots of the old color coming through (called “holidays” or “fish eyes”) this is because the paint coat shrinks as it dries. Two coats of paint will ensure a thick, even and uniform coat of your new color.
3. How many colors should I paint in my home? Again, there is no right or wrong answer here. Most homes that have been built in the last 10-15 years have an open-floor concept. Rooms all flow into one another so keeping one main color throughout the home with accent walls here and there is usually the way to go. Too many colors in an open floor plan tend to make the home look choppy. Rooms that have hard breaks and separations (such as bathrooms, bedrooms, laundry rooms) can be painted separate colors.
4. Are there odorless paints and how do they compare quality wise to regular paints? Yes, we use Sherwin Williams NO VOC/No Odor paints as a standard on all of our jobs. VOC is a volatile organic compound which is basically the harmful emissions from the paint. NO VOC paints have none of this creating a beautiful paint job, without all the stink. The quality of these paints is also equal in comparison to standard paints.
