Choosing Paint Colors to Complement Your Existing Features

Table of Contents

If you’re looking to touch up your interior walls, there’s more to consider than just the color of the new paint. It’s important to consider existing colors or finishes when choosing a paint color for your space. Whether you are looking for a subtle change or a dramatic one, there are several strategies you can use to ensure that your paint choice complements what’s already in the room and enhances the overall look.

Neutral Base Colors with Accent Colors

If you want to add a bit of flair without making too drastic of an impact, consider using neutral base colors with accent colors. This method allows you to easily update a room’s look by adding vibrant colors without having to repaint the entire room. When selecting an accent color, take into account existing pieces in the room, like furniture or artwork. You can also use this same technique if you have existing neutral walls and want to add a splash of boldness with an accent wall painted in an eye-catching hue.

Complimentary Color Schemes

You can also choose complementary colors for your walls if you want to create a cohesive look throughout your home. For example, if your furniture is predominantly blue, then painting your walls in shades of yellow will create pleasing contrast and draw attention to both the furniture and paint. When working with complimentary colors, it’s best not to go too bright, as this can overwhelm the space and make it feel cramped. Instead, opt for muted tones that complement each other while providing contrast.

Use Existing Finishes as Inspiration

If you don’t want any bold colors on your walls but still want something that stands out, try using existing finishes like wallpaper or flooring as inspiration for choosing paint colors. For instance, if the carpet on the floor has flecks of blue in it, then painting the walls in shades of blue will pull those elements together and give off an inviting yet unified feel throughout the space. The same goes for wallpaper; try painting walls adjacent to wallpaper in similar tones, as this will showcase both elements nicely without being too overwhelming or distracting from one another.

When choosing a paint color for any room in your home, it’s important to not only consider what kind of look and feel you want and take into account existing features so that all elements work together harmoniously rather than competing against each other. New paint can help create a beautiful space that both looks good and feels even better! With these tips in mind, you can be sure to pick just the right paint color every time!
